2023 was the hottest year in China’s history since temperatures start being recorded. The average temperature of China in 2023 was record-breaking higher that any other year in China.
On Tuesday, the officials said to the state media that 2023 caped a year of extreme weather occurrence all over the globe and China as well. China is the largest emitter of greenhouse gasses in the world. Which is one of the leading causes of climate change in the world.
According to scientists, the record-setting high temperatures in China were part of the extreme weather events around the world. Heatwaves, wildfires and droughts are result of these high temperatures cause by climate change.
China recorded an average temperature of 10.7 degrees Celsius or 51.3 Fahrenheit in 2023. This average temperature even broke the 2021 temperature in China of 10.5 degrees Celsius stated the National Climate Centre of Beijing.
According to the article by Chinese state media, “The temperature across most of the country was higher by 0.5C-1C.” 127 national weather stations across China saw record-breaking high temperatures daily within a year, added the state media article.
Beijing broke a 23 year old record last year in July by recording 27 consecutive days of high temperature above 35 degrees Celsius. Not only that but as the year progress, Beijing logged in higher temperatures than any year till late October.
China being the world’s highest emitter of greenhouse gasses like carbon dioxide that’s a leading cause of climate chang. It is predict to see more higher temperatures in 2024 as well. China has also approved coal-fired power plants to start functioning. Which will lead to more higher temperatures in the country in near future.
A recent study found that China’s air pollution has got worse in 2023 in a decade. China’s goal to decrease greenhouse gasses emissions by 2026 seems to have taken a backseat. So climate change effects will get worse in China in coming years.
